Kisah 32 Murid Utama Buddha Gotama: 6. YA Vakkali Thera

6. YA Vakkali Thera

Lahir di Sāvatthi dalam keluarga brahmana, oleh orang tuanya diberi nama Vakkali. Suatu hari beliau melihat Sang Buddha dan para bhikkhu sedang melakukan piṇḍapāta, terpesona dengan keagungan fisik Sang Buddha sehingga beliau mengikuti Sang Buddha dan para bhikkhu hingga vihāra. Di sana beliau selalu menatap keagungan Sang Buddha ketika membabarkan khotbah sambil beliau duduk di hadapan Sang Buddha. Karena keinginannya yang selalu ingin menatap Sang Buddha, beliau memohon agar ditahbiskan sebagai bhikkhu.

Sang Buddha tahu bahwa YA Vakkali tidak melakukan apa-apa dalam menjalani kebhikkhuan, kecuali hanya menatap Sang Buddha. Ketika saatnya tiba, Sang Buddha berkata kepada beliau, “Vakkali, apa gunanya engkau menatap tubuh busuk ini? Orang yang melihat Dhamma juga melihat Aku; orang yang melihat Aku juga melihat Dhamma.”

Terkemuka dalam Keyakinan

Pada suatu hari di tengah pertemuan dengan para bhikkhu, kepada YA Vakkali Sang Buddha menganugerahkan gelar sebagai siswa yang memiliki keyakinan yang terbaik.

Parinibbāna

Parinibbāna YA Vakkali digambarkan secara mengesankan dalam SN III.87:5: ” Sang Buddha, bersama-sama dengan sejumlah bhikkhu, pergi ke Batu Hitam di Lereng Gunung Isigili. Sang Buddha melihat di kejauhan YA Vakkali sedang berbaring di tempat tidur dengan bahu miring. Pada saat itu segumpal asap, yang berbentuk lingkaran hitam, sedang bergerak ke timur, lalu ke barat, lalu ke utara, lalu ke selatan, ke atas, ke bawah dan ke tengah. Kemudian, Sang Buddha berkata kepada para bhikkhu sebagai berikut: “ Para bhikkhu apakah kamu melihat gumpalan asap, berbentuk lingkaran hitam, yang sedang bergerak ke timur, lalu ke barat, lalu ke utara, lalu ke selatan, ke atas, ke bawah dan ke tengah?”

“Ya, Bhante.”

“Para bhikkhu, itu adalah Māra Sang Iblis, yang sedang mencari-cari kesadaran Vakkali sambil bertanya-tanya: “Di manakah kesadaran Vakkali terbentuk sekarang?” Namun, para bhikkhu, dengan tidak terbentuknya kesadaran, Vakkali telah mencapai Parinibbāna.”

Demikianlah kisah YA Vakkali Thera. Semoga dapat memberikan wawasan untuk kita semua.

6. The Venerable Vakkali Thera

He was born to a Brahmin family in Sāvatthi and named Vakkali. One day he noticed the Buddha and the retinue of monks going on alms round. He was so fascinated by the Buddha’s physical glory that he followed Him and the monks on their way back to the monastery. Then, the Venerable Vakkali sat in front of the Buddha expounding a discourse and at all times watched the latter’s body. Therefore, the Venerable Vakkali requested that he be ordained as a monk.

The Buddha noticed that the Venerable Vakkali did not do anything relating to monkhood but watched Him all the time. In the Vakkali Sutta (SN III, 87:5) the Buddha said to him: ”Vakkali, what’s the point looking at this vile body? One who sees the Dhamma also sees me. One who sees me sees the Dhamma.”

Excellence in Faith

One day during a meeting with monks, the Buddha conferred upon him the title of the Disciple foremost in faith.

Final Nibbāna

The Venerable Vakkali’s death is described impressively in SN III, 87:5: “The Blessed One, together with a number of bhikkhus, went to the Black Rock on the Isigili Slope. The Blessed One saw in the distance the Venerable Vakkali lying on the bed with his shoulder turned. Now on that occasion a cloud of smoke, a swirl of darkness, was moving to the east, then to the west, to the north, to the south, upwards, downwards, and to the intermediate quarters. The Blessed One then addressed the bhikkhus thus: “Do you see, bhikkhus, that cloud of smoke, that swirl of darkness, moving to the east, then to the west, to the north, to the south, upwards, downwards, and to the intermediate quarters?”

“Yes, Venerable sir.”

“That, bhikkhus, is Māra the Evil One searching for the consciousness of the clansman Vakkali, wondering: “Where now has the consciousness of the clansman Vakkali been established?” However, bhikkus, with consciousness unestablished, the clansman Vakkali has attained final Nibbāna.”
